It's quite bizarre. I was stopped -- blocked, in fact -- on a sidewalk by
a pedestrian, who I thought might be insane. I think now that she was some
sort of pedestrian vigilante who believed she was within rights to force
bicyclists to the streets. I was using the sidewalk for a short stretch to
get to a ramp to the street, in fact. The ordinance in Iowa City is that
bicyclists may use sidewalks but must yield to pedestrians, shout out when
passing, etc. I do these things. So I was in my rights, but I was
nevertheless surprised by her and my left foot was entangled in my pedal
straps and I ended up going down on my back left side like a 200 lb. sack
of potatoes. The part that really hurt is that she just walked on her way
and said, "Good." By the time I was able to disentangle myself from the
bike and get upright, she was nowhere to be seen. I thought I had gotten
up fairly quickly, but my sense of how much time I was down may be sketchy.
I have never personally experienced such a randomly malevolent attitude by
anyone. It's been almost one week and I am healing pretty well. I never
quit riding my bike. Probably shouldn't try riding a motorcycle for a
couple more weeks. Geesh.
I like the stirrups on my pedals, but I will change those to regular pedals
on that particular bike, which is my dry-weather town bike. I already have
safer pedals on my winter bike to avoid just this kind of problem. I
thought the dangers would be posed by the elements, not humans. Bad on me,
I guess.
