The timing of events shows these are unrelated.
In November 2011 I noticed feelings in my body that were different from any
I had previously felt. From about that time my weight started dropping.
Previously I had been more or less at a constant 11-1/4 stone (162 lb) from
the age of +- 20 years old (except when I was super-fit and strong in the late
1960's due to much skiing, and I added 18 lb muscle).
I'm due to be 75 this year.
My GP ( NZ term for General Practitioner = my med doctor) could come up
with no reason for my +- 10 kg weight loss. Al the blood tests etc he carried
out showed me to be OK healthy.
Several months later he referred me to an (expensive) GP specialist in
Dunedin, who fairly quickly determined that the cause of my weight-loss was
stress. I have since discovered that under stress the body preferentially
consumes muscle.
I won't go into detail on the causes of the stress I am under in this public
forum - if any one of you wishes to find out more please contact me off-list.
But it is significant.
I hadn't realised I was (and am) under stress, but he is right. As an
illustration, he quoted examples from WW2. NZ troops training at home
thousands of km from the front line, needed ( eg 2,500 maybe) calories to
maintain body condition. After they were taken to within closer proximity to
the battle front 20,000 km away, even though their daily routines were
unchanged, due to the stress of knowing that any day soon they would be
under fire, they required DOUBLE the food intake to maintain body
condition, due solely to the stress.
It was between November 2011 and visiting the specialist that I heard Dr
Esselstyn interviewed on radio, and was impressed enough by what he said
to follow his diet advice.
So I went vegan between Nov. 2011 and ( maybe) May 2012.
Since then, much more recently, having discovered Dr Joe Prendergast's
videos etc, and having corresponded with him, I have given up on the vegan
diet, and now take daily L-argenine supplement. He told me that adding L-
argenine to my diet above what the body produces naturally is sufficient to
protect from athersclerosis, and if any is present, to remove it.
Only a few months ago I started getting weird pains at night in my triceps
and scapular muscles. Now these are greatly reduced in bulk and strength
as well. I'm concerned that even if I start on a body-building programme at
my age now my body might no longer have the ability to respond
favourably...
Over the last week+ I've been laid low by a bout of bronchitis or something
similar which has dropped my weight a fraction still lower.
I really should get into regular daily weight work. I have the gear here. I
just
seem to have more 'won't" power than "will" power :-(
