Monarch butterflies were self-introduced into New Zealand about 1870, and
their success depended on the various milkweed plants that were
introduced by settlers. ( Gibbs G W "New Zealand Butterflies" 1980

Since then they seem to have developed several local seasonal hibernation
patterns / locations
