Santa Faz is a local holiday in Alicante, and the name of a monastery in the
suburb San Juan. The monastery houses an important relic, a piece of cloth used
to wipe the face of Jesus while he was on the cross. Once a year, a large
procession (tens of thousands of people) walks from the cathedral in the centre
of town to the monastery, where the relic is brought outside and a mass is held
on the square in front of the church. It is a local holiday. Besides the
religious aspect, the event is an excuse to have an all-day fiesta. I went to
have a look this morning and took lots of pictures. Three of them are here.
