At Robie House, we actually use the term "interpreter" since we're free
to go off-script a bit and interpret the house and Wright's work in our
own words. That's good for me, since I hate reciting from scripts, and
I've read all of Wright's own books, a dozen written about him, and have
studied drawings and photographs in addition to the buildings that we've
visited. I know some stuff, some stories, some interesting facts, and I
like to be conversational. My tours seem to appreciate it - I usually
get applause and once in a great while, someone will throw me some gas
money. That's always appreciated, since every time I go in, it's $9 in
tolls plus gas.
