Thursday I took a hike in the very scenic Goldfield Mountains east of
Phoenix. Normally I stick to a couple of washes, one of which is a
time-consuming bushwack and route finding adventure. This time, however, I
found that a new trail has been established that takes you over the ridge
between the two washes, bypassing the most difficult portion and providing
spectacular views of the crest of the range:

Photos cannot do this area justice as it's difficult to capture the layer
upon layer of ash flows and lave flows that resulted from millions of years of
eruptions from as many as seven volcanic calderas. Nor can you capture the
sounds of hawks, cactus wrens, and canyon wrens that surround you all day long.
Here are two additional photos of the scenery along this new trail:

THis was a very productive day for finding spring wildflowers, and here
are a few beginning with Blackfoot Daisy:

I have a number of other flower photos from this trip, but I have yet to
get the proper common and botanical names for them.
