This link gives details of one mobile/cellphone operator's tariffs
which might be of interest to Bob Whitmire to show something of how the
UK market works. Although my wife and I do use o2 for mobile calls, I
must emphasise that I know nothing about their coverage in NW
Scotland. I image the other service providers have similar websites. A
quick look at the amazon.co.uk website and links from it will show that
very basic Nokia mobile phones can be bought for between £10 and £20
(probably without 3G coverage). If choosing a phone, it would probably
be necessary to look at the sensitivity to weak signals rather than
eg.the quality of sound reproduction. For a Pay as U go system, in
England you can purchase more airtime quickly and easily at a lot of
newsagents and at supermarkets, while the Simplicity tariffs include a
data allowance which you can use if the phone is suitable - I
personally pay £5 per month for 100MB of data per month although at
home and in many hotels I can link my smartphone into a wi-fi system at
no extra cost if I wish to browse the web or similar
I would back the suggestion that you ask John Hudson about his
experiences as he has visited the UK several times in recent years to
visit family.
