I realize in some places you only have one option (or two if you
consider satellite) but the frustrating part is that the cable providers
usually have a monopoly that dates back to the early days of cable. The
cable companies lobbied for, and won, legislation that guaranteed them
exclusive coverage in any area where they were granted a license to
operate. So, for example, Cablevision (our original cable company back
in the early 80's) had a legal monopoly on most of NW Indiana, and that
monopoly transferred when they were purchased/absorbed by Comcast later
on. And I believe that Comcast's lobbyists were part of the reason the
FIOS initiative was killed because they felt threatened.
