Create a duplicate layer, then select the sky, usually Color=>Select, and or
the Quick Selection Tool, and use the
selection to create a mask (Add Layer Mask icon on the bottom of the Layers
palette.) Now you can do whatever you like
to the lower layer, and the halos, etc. are covered by the layer above.
I do this all the time.
