Thanks. Even after doing the research, I find I forget details, so it's useful
for me, too.

I've just left it on the minimum,1/8 sec. mode, and basically forget it. No
problem for my type of shooting. OTOH, it's
really quick and easy to change it, using the Super Control Panel. If your SCP
is on Drive Mode, it's four clicks to
turned on or off, including the click to access SCP.

As to pursable, the E-M5 has that faux pentaprism hump for the viewfinder, with
flash shoe on top. Even with the shoe
filler in, it's just gonna catch on things. Although it seems hardly larger
than the Pens, and generally is, the
shape/details are likely be troublesome in a purse.
Something like the E-P2 would be much more purse friendly, really easy with
Panny 20/1.7 or 14-42 'X'. The shoe is
partially sunk into the top, and the camera as a whole has no parts that would
catch on things. Just check the Mode dial
after pulling it out.
I know it's no E-M5, but the question to be answered may be what one wants to
do with it. You've been using the G9, and
I'll tell you, any of the Pens are on a whole higher IQ plane. I've had the
same imaging engine in the A650 and have a
G11, and know whereof I speak.
OTOH, is that the best strategy? A capable compact really can go anywhere with
no inconvenience, where an ILC will
always be a bit large/heavy. Then bring out the serious camera and lenses when
desired. The S100, as one example among
several, but one I know, has better IQ than the G9, and is light and tiny. Much
better WA, but limited tele, compared to G9.
As to the shutter shock, I've ignored it with the E-PE2 so far. Just went back
and looked at a few in the 'danger'
shutter speed zones. And I'm just not seeing trouble. Of course, I didn't do
any A-B comparisons, but there's some
awfully crisp detail in some shots in that range. You know how sharp that 12-50
is in Macro Mode.
From the link you provided, it appears the Pens are less troubled by shutter
shock than the Pannys, which is what
SLR-Gear used for their test. And I really wonder if it is an issue hand held.
All the serious testers have the cameras
mounted. You remember Gary's troubles with aperture actuation vibration. He
even went so far as to freeze the tripod
legs into the ice of a rink, and still had it. Yet the same lenses, hand held,
don't seem to have the problem, at least
not nearly as bad. Clearly, the cameras set off sympathetic vibrations in the
tripod/head combo.
It's possible it's just not an issue for a 'purse camera' that will be
hand-held. Now you've got me thinking about that
'X' lens, darn you. :-) With an E-PL2, you'd have a sweet, compact combo. But
then, about my only frustration with
E-PL2 and 12-50 is the lack of tele range, so I may be safe.

What if the Hokey Pokey *IS* what it's all about?
