...lowers upfront costs. No one building a custom home around here even
considers forced air heat. Most are ground or air heat pumps or hot
water boilers that provide domestic hot water as well as heat.That isn't
to say that air handling isn't a big part of the system. Modern systems
rely on low velocity/high volume air movement both for comfort and
efficiency. Old systems depend upon a hot primary heat source (flame)
and a strong fan. Hence the under-sized, in today's terms, ducting.
Of course cost is important. A good designer of which there are several
around here is careful to size the system to the application. When you
retrofit an old house hopefully it isn't just the heat source that is
taken into consideration but also the delivery system.
