It turns out that you are confusing the tropical Carica papaya (papaya)
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papaya>
with the eastern US Asimina triloba (pawpaw or paw paw).
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asimina_triloba>
I knew the name since the city of Paw Paw, Michigan
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paw_Paw,_Michigan>
is not far from Battle Creek, Michigan where I was born and raised until
age 15. But I never realized it was a tree with edible fruit and have
never seen one that I recall. While Paw Paw, Michigan was named after
the tree in 1837 it's at the extreme northern range of the tree. So I
suppose that it's not unusual that I was not familiar with it.
I don't like papaya either. I hope pawpaw tastes better. Maybe Rick
can tell use since he's growing them. :-)
