Depending on how you set it, Aperture either can set up a file structure, or it
can use yours, using "referenced" files.
Before hard disks got so ridiculously cheap, I had all my photos on CD-ROMs and
DVDs, and used Aperture to index them using referenced files. When you tried to
modify an image, it would prompt you to insert the proper media.
