While I was out cycling this weekend, I happened to notice something
moving by my foot while waiting to cross a major street. Looking closer it
turned out to be a very large butterfly. It had been stunned and was missing a
small piece of one wing. I gathered it up, gently folded the wings, and placed
it inside a small notebook I carry. After getting home, I spread the wings out
and got out the field guides. Turned out to be a Giant Swallowtail (Heraclides
cresphontes), with a wingspan of just under five inches:
