You and I in the same boat. I have been a fan of VW's since the same time
period, but didn't get to own one up until the year 2000.
I still linger on VW Vortex and am restoring a Golf Mk3.
Here is my take:
Reliability. Two decades ago even the American cars surpassed the German ones
in terms of reliability.
Design. German cars arent "easy on the eye anymore". Back to VW, I admit they
do hit a sweet spot with the Tiguan (see my comment above) and the Scirocco,
but the latter isnt coming to US. The new Beetle and Golf/Jetta look very
cheap.

Bill .. why the advice to avoid German or French made cars? I have been
a VW devotee since 1976 and have not once been disappointed. jh
