After reading your follow-on detailed post it finally sunk in that live 
view exposure measurement should be perfectly able to control TTL flash 
exposure.  Waddya know.  Time to take another look at Metz.  But lately, 
Dr. Manual Flash has been using a T-32 in auto mode on the 5D for 
outdoor fill flash on the 5D (in the 6 foot range).  Takes a lot of 
twiddling of the ISO slider to get a decent fill exposure but seems to 
work well.  Better than I can calculate or measure a test flash exposure.
