I look forward to seeing the images! It reminds me of my a trip that
my wife and I took to Italy in the fall of 2002. We did not have a
car, and took a bus from Siena to Rome, from where we were going to
head south. It so happened that we were there just in time for this:

We probably tried over 20 hotels and there was no room. I heard later
that an extra 300,000 people were in Rome. After a couple of surreal
hours in the train station surrounded by fighting hotel-finders and a
woman who was occupied by pushing a shopping cart around the station
shouting at the top of her lungs, we got on a train to Milan and
proceeded to have a fantastic time in the north of Italy.
