Same problem as seen in some of Nathan's photos in Spain. With a decline in
population, there are surplus houses that
are of no use for any other purpose.
Abandonment is the cheapest option when someone leaves or dies and there is no
one else to live there, even for free.
The vast majority of Chris's photos of the area are not likely to attract
anybody new to visit or move there. :-)
There are a fair number of falling down farm buildings here in Maine, but most
appear to be on working farms where other
buildings are kept up and the house may be very nicely kept. When the nature of
the business changes, and a building
becomes no longer of economic use, the cheapest solution may be to stop
maintaining it, let it fall down and nature take
its course. Works well for wood structures.
