Perhaps it's a result of cheap batch manufacture in a market where
continuous upgrades are expected - they can essentially make a batch of
model #1 followed by a batch of model #1a, see how well each sells while
models #2 and #2a are in manufacturing, using the results of the 'test
marketing' to refine model #3 and so forth.
I have the clear impression that the E-xxx series were only ever
manufactured in a single batch each.

I am slightly puzzled by Oly's strategy of many only slightly differentiated
models. When I was looking at the deal with
E-PL1 and 14-150 for only $0.05 more than the lens alone, I looked into the
whole E-P(L/M) line and was amazed at the overlaps.
Still, versions of the latest PL and PM models with a great sensor do make
sense.
