The excerpt I posted was for demonstration only and refers to aix where
it was possible to place the data in certain areas of the disk. Now if
you want speed you use ssd's of course they bring new problems for
server use but for home users once you have used one for the OS you will
Never Ever go back to a hard disk. In my fast macbook I have an ssd for
the os and applications and keep my photos on a hard drive where the DVD
once was.
We did need to do periodical reorgs of the databases which meant backing
them up and rewriting the data back to the disk in the correct sequence
(defragmentation) which gave measured performance improvements but this
was over 15 years ago when disks were much smaller and slower than today.
There is new technology on the horizon which will significantly reduce
the cost of solid state drives so that within 5 years I expect we will
be wondering what was that hard drive thingy we used to discuss on the
OMD list ;-)
