Chris,
I don't want to start a shouting match. The drip rails were installed in
1998, with the last roof job, and are perfectly intact, though they may
indeed be hard to see in the small area shown in the photo.
The previous felt layer, from 1998, was perfectly intact when these shingles
were removed, and it was left beneath the new layer. There is more than
enough felt coverage to do the job. I am not a codes expert, and I don't
know how codes vary from place to place, but I am happy with what I saw as
the old shingles were removed, and the new felt layer was applied.
I was more concerned about the flashing they were to install around the
chimney, and, from what I saw them do, and what I can see from the ground,
it appears to be a professional job, much better than the previous one. At
82, I am no longer allowed to climb on the roof to make a closer inspection.
