Hi, Phillipe. Although I used to live about 10 miles just north of
Boston the only hotel I've ever stayed in the Boston area is The Charles
Hotel in Cambridge (north and across the river from Boston). The home
of Harvard, MIT, etc. But The Charles is not a budget hotel. I just
checked and the minimum room rate is $299/night. I wouldn't have paid
to stay in The Charles myself but my prospective employer did when I was
first interviewed for my job. The company I worked for then was right
across the street.
Then I thought that if Alice is willing to ride the subway (called the
"T" in Boston) she might be able to go outside the city to find a
cheaper rate. I'm very familiar with riding the "Red Line" which has
its northern terminus at "Alewife Station" on the north side of
Cambridge. I checked to see if there was a cheaper hotel near the
station and there is. It's called the "Best Western Plus Hotel Tria"
and is about 1/2 mile walk from the station. Still not cheap at $180
per night but better than $299.
But it appears that perhaps there is some event going on in Boston in
mid-August. I tried to make reservations at both hotels for Aug 15 and
16 and no rooms are available at either hotel for that period. But the
week before and week after do have rooms available. I don't know what
event (if any) is going on in mid August but if her travel date is
flexible she might find better availability and price.
If traveling the "T" outside the city to find a cheaper room is
acceptable here is a map for the "T". She could find the line and
station nearest to where she'll be working and then use Google to search
for hotels near the stations on whatever line she chooses. For example,
I found the Best Western Plus Hotel Tria by searching Google for [hotels
near Alewife station]

around Boston is right here: <http://www.mbta.com/>
ps: Boston is a very safe city. It's quite small and compact and
considered a "walking city" since one can easily walk to many
destinations. Riding the "T" is also quite safe.
