Tina,
1. Open up the scanned "HDR" image in Photoshop. (the raw hdr image,
not a processed one).
2. Click on the "Image" tab, expand the "Adjustments" sub-menu, and
select the "Exposure" option.
3. Drag the "Gamma correction" slider to the left. (I think it will be
to the left). You will most likely need to drag it ALL the way over.
Click OK.
See what that does.
If I were to venture a guess, you've been using curves to correct the
image, not gamma.
