Yes, over here it's in the run up to Armistice Day, 11/11 (or for those who
prefer mm/dd format, 11/11) - but do you mean they no longer do so? Perhaps
not old ladies any more, but over here certainly an ongoing 'tradition'
(term used in lieu of another that I just can't think of at the moment!).

Not that it's necessarily a negative association, but don't you recall in
days of yore when old ladies sold paper poppies by the basketsfull around
Veterans Day, which I don't think was Veterans Day then, but rather
Armistice Day or some such.
