Corn requires more fertilizer per acre than most of not all other cereal grains, and the process of extracting nitrogen from the atmosphere to make it is very energy intensive. The process was invented in Germany prior to WWI, and after the war the munitions factories were converted to fertilizer factories. If not for that process, world population would have leveled off at around 2 billion due to the limits of non-fertilizer food production.
