Dean Hansen (our resident bug guy) sent me a private note telling me
that the culprits are "leafcutter bees". See:

They are native to the western US which is probably why I was not
familiar with them.
I vaguely recall the gate but my eyes were dazzled by numerous sights.
I was trying to take it all in and missed many details (well, that's my
excuse for poor memory)
