If I'd have had a gun yesterday I'd have blasted the doe that was in our 
back yard.  There is a small herd of about a dozen deer that are 
frequently outside our fence in back in the neighbor's yard.

Yesterday morning at about 5am I noted a single doe on our side of the 
fence calmly chomping on some wild greenery growing along the fence.  It 
was only later in the day that I discovered she had also neatly lopped 
off the tops of two maple seedlings in the middle of the yard that I 
have been nursing along since they first sprouted in spring of 2011. 
They just happened to sprout where my wife and I had determined we 
needed a large shade tree.  I built a little wall of rocks to surround 
them and protect them from the lawn mower.  I've watered and fertilized 
them and plucked the grass from around them to give them every chance to 
grow.  They were very slow to start but a few weeks ago they started 
producing some very nice (and apparently tasty) leaves.  Yesterday... 
chomp, chomp... both had all their leaves bitten off at about 8" above 
ground level.  Arggh!

The larger one still has two tiny leaf buds each less than the size of a 
BB.  I still have hope it will survive.

Venison spiedies anyone?
