I have this same scanner, bought a couple of years ago. Back in my film days, I
used a Nikon LS-2000 but now I use medium format, so I bought the Epson. With
the Nikon, I loved Vuescan, so that was my first port of call with the Epson
too. But after cursing at Vuescan over the very issue you raise, I gave up on
it and have stuck to Epson Scan since then, which actually gives very good
results.
