Not disagreeing, but have you ever been to the British Isles?
A friend tells of visiting Cornwall and spotting a town with the
interesting name of "Mousehole." He pronounced it as spelled and was
told it had not been spoken that way since before the war. He uttered
something about WW1 or WW2 and was told, "Not that war. The war with
the Spanish."
My great grandmother was from Arkansas and pronounced it as spelled.
Plenty of people did at one time.
