In general yes. In your example it's "photographer's choice". Depends
upon the look you're after. Sometimes I let the higlights go and the
shadows too. Sunset for example because that's what the eye expects to
see. That 5D is going to give you more DR so your manual method will
give you satisfactory results more of the time than my e620. Why not
try it both ways with a difficult subject and see?
