I've been lurking somewhat owing to a hectic life and pressure on it from
Probate, work and Other Stuff, but it's all beginning to level out.
Yesterday was the occasion for a flying competition between my squadron and 3
other university air squadrons. The events were practice forced landings
(PFLs), aerobatics and low-level navigation. My squadron didn't win, but they
all had a good time. I didn't fly at all so had time to take some photos of
the youngsters at some stage.
In case anyone is interested, the photos at
<https://picasaweb.google.com/flyulas/DeHavilland2012?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCITz3623vZj7Qg&feat=directlink>
Show a student landing on a PFL and trying to make it into a scoring part of
the runway (he didn't; the wind was very slack and we had not managed to
practise for that); some long-range aeros shots (up at 4,000ft) and some
hero/heroine shots of the competitors, both ground and air.
The final shot is of a "mess cannon". It's a steel tube fitted to a fire
extinguisher; the charge is cheap aerosol deodorant (they used to use Lynx
until they discovered that any aerosol deodorant would do), the projectile a
frozen can of beer, frozen orange or apple :-) Ours was by far the best,
making the runway from the hangar, about 350yds.
This is only for Bob, you understand. He expressed a wish, a few months ago,
to see some of our students in their flying suits. I didn't know if he meant
male or female so I included both, Bob :-)
