Joel's comments about the 5D followed by a flash comment reminded me
that just recently I tried some daylight fill flash photos on the 5D
using a T32 in auto mode. Something I've been meaning to do for a long
time and finally had the perfect opportunity to do it.
My community here in Florida is a 55+ RV park with about 200 (mostly)
couples resident. One of the spring activities is an event called "Fun
Day". We have a parade in the morning with people dressed up in silly
costumes driving or walking beside silly floats mostly made of golf
carts. Later we have a cookout lunch and play some simple games that
people have devised... a rubber chicken toss into a bucket, lawn
bowling, golf of various forms, horse racing with carved wooden horses,
card games, etc., etc. The activities are outdoors, people are in close
quarters and the day is usually full sun with harsh shadows everywhere.
Not exactly conducive to snapshot photography in my preferred method
of fill flash using a meter.
I wanted to be gentle with the flash so I decided on a simple experiment
using the 5D at ISO 100, 1/200 second (fastest sync speed), f/11 and a
T32 in auto mode set at ISO 100 and f/5.6... in other words, lying to
the flash about aperture to reduce flash exposure by 2 stops. Clouds
came and went during the day so the exposure wasn't always at f/11 but
was for the most part. While there are a few shots with near
backgrounds showing distinct shadows (in the shadows) I think for the
most part the result with the flash was better than it would have been
without. With the flash exposure 2 stops down the strength of some of
those shadows in the shadows surprised me so I'll have to be more
mindful of that in the future.
Anyhow the following link is the result.
