Some years ago I watched a fireball break up on the western horizon
here. It started out as a huge, bright bluish-white ball passing from south
to north. Just as it was about to dip below the horizon it broke up into
five or so pieces. All but one piece split away and turned a dazzling white
before extinguishing, while the one piece that stayed on the original
trajectory turned bright red and then extinguished. My guess was that it
was a very small comet-like object that had an iron core.
