Went on safari, took 33 lbs. of gear. Don't do that. Longest lens I took was
500, and used 70-300 with the 1.7 extender. Rarely needed to remove the
extender, and had little use for anything wider. I would, were I going
again, take something in the 600 area, a fast 300, money and weight
allowing, something like a 70-200, and something near 28. Also a decent
point n shoot. I cant imagine where you will use the tripod and the beanbag,
but a monopod was handy, as most shooting was from inside the Land Cruiser.
What will be your transportation? This can limit weight allowed. Last two
legs to the camp were on a single piston engine Cessna and an aging
eurocopter, hence weight limits, but bags were weighed by the pilot hefting
them, not with a scale.

Thanks for the reply, Moose. And you couldn't be more wrong, very helpful!
Your point about redundancy strikes a chord. I had been contemplating
taking the E-400 and E-620 anyway, but buying the grip for the 620 to
extend shooting. But I'm now thinking that if I stick with the 400/620
batteries I only need one charger, or one type of charger (I have two of
them). The grip would mean another charger...
Lenses, well, I have 11-22, 14-42, 14-45, 17.5-45 and 40-150; plus any
MF lenses I care to include. Initial thoughts were take 11-22, 40-150
and acquire the 70-300 for its reach. That would be two bodies and three
zooms, all light, covering 22-600 fov in 35mm.
Tripod is probably out, unless it's a tabletop. I'd take a beanbag and
make a decision on the monopod when I pack, but assume not. Only
built-in flash. Loads of cards, as I don't think I can squeeze in a laptop.
I might want to take a compact for casual shooting and fast, close-range
opportunities, so may nab a used raw-enabled compact sometime.
That's the initial thought, at least. Still time to change mind, panic,
change it again..!
