No, this began suddenly Tuesday morning. It had happened earlier last
November, and ther's a discussion group within eBay where it went back and
forth. The solution for that episode was to manually change a default setting
in the IE8 advanced tools. Everything has worked fine until Tuesday.
The real mystery about this episode is what happened yesterday morning. I
installed Firefox and everything worked fine for about 45 minutes, then the
exact same problems occured. I uninstalled and then reinstalled Firefox and
that did not fix it.
If I right-click on any of the non-working items, such as a ZOOM button,
what I see in the properties is "unknown protocol" and "javascript:;", which is
exactly what you see in IE6. I've updated the Java in this machine twice in
the past three months and that's not the problem.
I've done three virus scans, spyware scans, and even installed another
malware programme that's reportedly good at finding stuff lurking in the
registry. Nothing.
