I believe the original reference to be a take on Edward Weston's comment, so
often quoted by Walt:
"Anything more than 500 yards from the car just isn't photogenic."
Thus I take the 100 yds to be a 200 yd round trip.
A five mile round trip is 5 x 5280 = 26,400'
Divide by 3 for yards is 8,800 yds.
Divide by 2 for one way part of round trip is 4,400 yds.
That's how my quick hand calculator did it, anyway.
I also remember that 440 yds is 1/4 mile. 440 x 4 x 2.5 = 4,400.
I only know what a furlong is when someone tells me, then it slips away. Guess
that I've never been any closer to the
races than a Marx Brothers movie and you'd be right. :-)
