My feeling is this: If you need the horsepower that Photoshop delivers, then
you should be following the upgrade path anyway. I started with CS2 and have
upgraded every time, to the current CS5. Each upgrade had something of value.
In CS5, that's particularly true. Content-aware fill is worth the upgrade price
alone. Then there's puppet warp, which I have not used, but which will blow
your socks off your feet.
That said, for many if not most, Elements is probably enough. Or other
non-amateurish editing platforms. There's not much point in owning that Shelby
GT if you're going to drive around town at 25 mph. Sure, it's nice in the
driveway, but do you need it? No.
For people who really need Photoshop, the price is not a deal-breaker.
