Very sad. But the clarity is important.
I'm about to leave Madeira, where the economy's flagging is evident. The
public lido (Zona Balnear) has not been repaired after storms damaged it a
couple of years ago. In the former EU that would have been done pretty
quickly, but this little island has acted pragmatically, I believe, spending
only the money that it has.
They employ loads of people to sweep, to plant, to serve; these are probably
low-paid jobs, but they keep people employed and low cost and make the place
look attractive to keep the visitors coming.
And although tipping is welcomed, the attitude seems to be that they are glad
that tourists are here, whether or not they tip.
Chris
p.s. In the video I was glad to hear one of them say "none of them is . . ."
(rather than "are), but then sorry to hear each of them say, "you've only lost
$1m . . ." (should be "lost only $1m").
