I think it was Isaac Asimov who wrote a short treatise on life limited
by the number of heartbeats. He compared man and lots of mammals along
with heart rate and maximum recorded longevity for the species. I don't
remember the exact count but heart rate and maximum longevity are
closely related across all the mammals he studied. I'm glad I'm not a
shrew! :-)
