Rick & Chris,
In the interest of evaluating my Soligor (3-element?) extender, I did a
crude tripod setup to compare two of my sharper lenses. The first was my
Leica Telyt-R 250/4, on the E-510, using LiveView for focusing ( which is a
PITA in bright sunlight). The lens was set at f/8 to get a comparable
exposure to the second shot. The RAW image was converted and resized in PSE,
with no sharpening or editing.

The second image was made with the same camera setup, using my Takumar
135/3.5 lens, set at f/4, plus my Soligor 2X extender. I mover the tripod
back a little, to compensate for the extra reach, but, obviously moved it
too far.

Comparing the two images, I find that the sharpness of the petals is not too
different, but the warmth of the Telyt is evident compared to the colder
color of the Takumar.
The rendering of the brick background is quite different in each case. To
me, though the FL of the two setups is not too different, the resulting
backgrounds show that the DOF is quite different. To me, it appears that
the 2X just takes the 135 image and magnifies it. Perhaps that is all it is
intended to do.
Conclusion: If you want the image to look like it was made with a long
tele, get a long tele. The extender won't do it.
