Just got off the phone with our friends. Their son and two nephews
performed a whirl-wind cleanup of the basement this weekend. Removed
all the sheetrock and insulation from only 30" on down in most areas and
a bit higher in another room. I was afraid that the insulation would
have been soaking up the water and they'd have to cut everything off
higher up. They're making good progress. Apart from getting a new
boiler within the next month or so there is nothing left that's time
critical.
The man's brother's basement was filled to a depth of about 6 feet. He
may find that the house is a total loss (big crack across the entire
front wall of the foundation) but he managed to find a rental house a
short distance away. The majority of their furniture was not damaged so
they can start moving in right away.
So far, no insurance adjusters have been around but I did manage to
photographically document the inside damage and outside maximum height
of the water. It's important to document that the river never entered
the house from the outside since that's flood insurance which they don't
have. But they do have insurance for the sewage system backing up into
the house which is what happened. As a matter of fact I just remembered
that I posted them on my site: Check the floors which used to be light
colored carpet. You can see our tracks through the mud.

I've got a few other snapshots taken on the Samsung WB650 that I may
post later on. The amount of junk put out to the curbs is amazing. In
many cases the junk pile extends from curb to front porch. It will be
months before it all gets hauled away.
