The one thing about the Airy disc is that it isn't 100% blurred at the
edge. If the Airy disc is, say 10 microns in diameter, the actual
direct impact on resolution is around 7 microns. Often times, a touch
of pixel-level sharpening is all that is necessary to bring things
back to maximum digital sharpness.

Another factor regarding the Bayer algorithm is that even though there
is pixel overlap (causing a forced reduction resolution to be less
than 1:1 pixels and the AA filter is another limiter), the pixels as
converted through the raw converter are not a replacement of the
existing pixels, but effectively a new pixel at the intersection of
the three colors (1 green, 1 red, 1 blue, NOT 2 green, unless you are
shooting with an Olympus camera). So, in terms of a drum scanner, what
we are doing is increasing the aperture, but keeping the steps at
maximum resolution.
