It works the same way for Garmin GPS units. Mine failed shortly before
the warranty period expired with a bad power switch. What I got back
was the same model but definitely not the same unit. The flip out
antenna on the replacement had a significantly weaker detent spring and
some other minor difference that I can't remember. But they did upgrade
the map for me at no charge. At least they say they did. Whatever
errors it made or places it couldn't find before were the same in the
new map. :-(
