I'm in agreement that the rings are pretty much a result of the corrective
optics--specifically these newer style lenses with complex curvatures to one
or more elements. Usually, we see these donuts with modern zooms, but the
zoom lenses combine the donuts with restricted spread which creates the
illusion of increased sharpness as well as increased DoF.
Since the Moose brought it up, the Zuiko 50/3.5 is one of those strange
beasts. When focused close, the background OOF highlights may go edgy, but
when focused at normal distances (2-4 meters), combined with a stopdown to
F5.6, this lens can get downright classical in nature and punches way above
its weight.
Yesterday, I did something I haven't had an opportunity to do, lately. Shoot
the OM-3Ti with the 35/2.8 lens. That lens may not be the best around, but
it sure makes pleasant pictures with few bad habits.
