I think it gets more important the larger the negative since it's 
difficult to hold it flat unless completely supported.  The only thing I 
know about wet mounting is seen here

This clearly isn't some form of mineral oil but I've no doubt that it 
might be used in some process.  But cleaning up after would be a mess.
