Perhaps I shouldn't have bit my tongue, after all. In Jim's situation, I'd be
looking at buying a new, W7 machine. As
you've pointed out, compatibility, both hardware and software, starts to become
problematic after a while.
If I fall into any money, I'm thinking at least quad processor, 8 GB of RAM and
a solid state primary drive. Hmmm, would
that save me enough time to get a part time job and pay for the computer? Nah,
I just waste it playing with images,
reading, napping or nattering here. :-)

The WD edition of Acronis I'm using seems to be a latish version of 10, and
works fine on Vista.

Yup, works well for me. When I first got it, I could hot swap drives by
rescanning in Storage Manager. Some upgrade or
other appears to have killed that, so I do have to reboot anytime I plug in or
turn on ANY eSATA drive or swap drives in
the BlacX. Might or might not be particular to my hardware, though.
