Leica Camera Sells for 1.3m Euro
An extremely rare 1923 O-Series Leica has sold for a staggering 1.3 million
Euro (US$1.9 million). This makes it the most expensive camera in the
world today. The camera is number 7 in a series of around 25 pieces built to
test the market by Leitz in 1923. It was manufactured two years before the
official market launch of the Leica (Leitz Camera). It is the only known
camera with the "Germany" gravure on the top plate. According to factory
documents the camera was sent to New York to be patented, hence it is
also the first exported Leica. This camera tops the previous record held by a
Daguerreotype from 1839, which sold in 2010 for 732, 000 Euros (USD
1,054,000). As it happens, we have a brand new working replica of the
record-breaking Leica O-Series camera in store now - it's yours for a mere
NZ$5,000 !!
