Ahh,
Thanks Moose and Chuck. Question fully answered. It is very clear that
the download speed was device limited and 25min is much better than 5
hours. I had to reset
the time to idle to avoid interruption. I was not sure about the
location of the bottleneck. My newish fancy shmancy laptop has a usb
3.0 port (separate NEC chip and not supported in native BIOS) so the
external device may be more flexible and fit the bill. I suspect the
USB 3.0 flavors will be commonplace and 2 or 3 bucks within a year.
Digging around yesterday ran into this site and found it interesting,
but it was updated and no longer available so had to find a cached
version.
