In that situation you have two good choices and one bad one: The bad is to
slink away, thus lending credence to the diatribe. The other two are 1) get
back in her face and give her a dose of the same medicine. Nothing backs off a
mom-bully like a little aggrieved backlash. There are a few self-evident
dangers in this approach, however, so I would opt for the second choice: as
soon as her voice is raised, take out your cell phone and dial the police to
report a verbal assault that has put you in fear for your safety. If you call
the cops first, you've got the upper hand from there on out.
