The "Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English" by the esteemed Eric Partridge is in general agreement, but lists an additional meaning, doubtless that which is familiar to Bob, as "Canadian". Perhaps geography was not Partridge's strength. Or perhaps he knew more about Maine than I give him credit.
